In Memoriam, Legendary Marvel Inker Joe Sinnott (10/16/1926 - 06/25/2020)

Joltin’ Joe Sinnott passed away this week at 93. His grandson Dorian posted to Joe’s Facebook page on Thursday, “He passed away this morning, June 25th, at 8:40am at the age of 93. He enjoyed life and was drawing up until the end.”

Our thoughts are with the Sinnott family at this difficult time! For those unfamiliar with his work, here are some facts and some of his amazing contributions to Marvel and the wonderful world of comics!

  • A WWII veteran, Joe attended School of Visual Arts (Cartoonists and Illustrators School) in New York City in 1949 on the G.I. Bill (Lambiek.net)

  • Joe hadn’t heard of Fantastic Four before signing up with Stan Lee and Jack Kirby (wiki)

  • Joe Sinnott inked Jack Kirby’s version of the Norse god Thor’s first appearance in Journey into Mystery #83 (wiki)

  • After retirement from comics in 1992, he still collaborated with Alex Saviuk on the Spider-Man newspaper strip. He really retired from the strip in March 2019, at age 92 (JoeSinnott.com)
